Letter to the Community

Dear Madera family,

One of the greatest strengths of our community is a steadfast determination to do what is right for our children and a willingness to fight for what we believe is right for them. This week, your care and concern, for your children, our school and our teachers, was made evident when we learned that some of our fine teachers will be leaving us. I know there’s a desire to fight to keep them so I want to clarify and explain a bit about the situation.

First, no teachers were laid off this year. Hurray for no pink slips! This means that all our teachers have jobs in the district for the coming school year. Last year, as a district, we lost some excellent teachers as a result of budget cuts but thankfully not this year.

In public education, teachers are hired by the district, not to a particular school. Most everything about their work is laid out in a contractual agreement which is legally binding; this includes when and how people secure positions in schools and the process by which this happens. Because our teachers were hired when they were last year, their positions were required to be posted for internal bidding this year. This is the process outlined for our district in the agreement between the United Teachers of Richmond (UTR) and WCCUSD.  It’s not something anyone at this point can change.

As a community we can be glad because the word is out that good things are happening at Madera. We had a huge number of teachers desiring to fill the four positions we had available. For each position, I was able to meet with the most senior teachers who had expressed interest. I had some say but seniority was the primary determinant. Through this initial round of placement, we were able to offer Eric Danysh one of the 5th grade positions at Madera which he accepted (yeah for us!), a position for which he will not need to reapply for next year. We will welcome three other fine teachers who are looking forward to joining our team. More about them will be coming.

The thing with education is that in what at times seems like such a ridiculous and crazy system, things tend to work out in ways we never would have expected. Sometimes we have something to learn or give, in a place or capacity that we wouldn’t have imagined. The work we do is so rooted in relationships that change is often painfully hard. We bond over the intense work that we do and become so close.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to work with Jennette Gay, Heather Best and Stephanie King this year. They are incredibly wonderful, highly skilled teachers who have become greatly valued members of our staff and school community. We all, mostly the children, have been blessed to have them with us. Now, they move to new posts where their talents will be used to benefit other schools in the district. I feel very conflicted – ever so sad to see them go, knowing the loss it will be and how much I will miss them, but confident that they will be a tremendous asset to their new school communities. Professionally, having secured positions during these “rounds”, they will be secure in their positions next year.

Many of you have asked what we can do. The very best thing we can do is to find ways to show our gratitude for the wonderful year we’ve had with these beloved teachers. They have gone the extra mile at every turn for the benefit of our kids so let’s celebrate them in these last weeks of school, encouraging them as they deal with their own grief of leaving Madera and embark on their next assignment.

Please, don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Grateful, as always, for all of you and your commitment to our school,

Alison Makela

May PTA Meeting Summary

Dear Madera Friends,

We held our final 2012-2013 PTA meeting this past Monday evening. Thank you to all who attended! Special thanks to Patty Osorio-O’Dea for picking up the Little Star Pizza and to Steffany Gaffagan for making the kale salad.

The membership voted to increase the yearbook budget, allowing us to buy more yearbooks. If you have not yet ordered a yearbook, get an order in immediately. We have been able to slightly increase the yearbook quantities so please put your order in the box by Friday- we have very limited supply so first come first serve!- no orders will be filled after Friday. Negar Souza has worked very hard again this year to bring us the Madera yearbook! Special thanks to her and everyone who helped design the pages and submit photos.

The word from Churchill Downs, aka our Auction Committee, is that this year’s auction was a financial success. We already knew the evening was delightful! Final numbers will be reported soon. Thank you once again to every single person who participated – you made it happen!

Our Treasurer, Carolee Purcell, reminds everyone: “All PTA warrants MUST be submitted by the end of the school year (June 7th) to the President’s box to ensure reimbursement for expenses”. If you have receipts for purchases you made for the PTA, you must fill out the warrant form (available in the Treasurer’s box), and attach your receipt. For your own records, please retain a copy of the form and receipt. If you have any questions, please contact Carolee for instructions.

Carolee also reported that we have received budget proposals for 2013-2014 from the Garden, Library, and Technology committees. Matt Reed and Negar Souza also report that chairs from this year’s events have submitted recommendations for 2013-2014. If you think you may need to submit a budget proposal, please do so immediately (deadline was May 6th). All the proposals and recommendations will be passed on to the 2013-2014 Executive Board for consideration.

We held a traffic planning session for about 30 minutes. Thanks to Cassidy Ellis for filming traffic hot spots around campus! She, along with Principal Makela, led a brainstorming session to figure how we can cope with traffic safety around campus. If you are interested in helping with traffic safety, please contact Cassidy.

I would like to thank everyone who helped strengthen our Madera community during 2012-2013. The list is very long indeed! The Madera staff, led by Principal Makela, works the trenches daily. Thanks to her and all the classroom teachers, enrichment teachers, and supporting teachers and staff! Thank you to the parents for nurturing your students. And thanks to the students who work so hard!

Many parents and grandparents volunteer on campus. They are really an invaluable resource for teachers, and are commended for their generosity!

Many of you contributed to our Direct Appeal program, led by Nancy Kawase. The program was a huge success this year, and I am very grateful for everyone who gave, and to Nancy who worked so hard and so effectively!

Special thank you to all our volunteers and chairs of all our events. Your dedication and service make the year whiz by!

Special thanks to the Madera PTA Executive Board, who remained committed throughout the year to our community and our students. I am personally very thankful for your service to our membership.

We still have a few weeks of school left just yet, so stay strong – vacation is right around the corner…and the Madera Carnival is this Saturday from 11-3 on the Lower Yard!

Go Madera!

3 ways to get involved with the Madera Garden

P1070898Hello all,

We have lots of exciting events coming up in the garden, so we hope that everyone will find a way to take part.  Check it out:

1.  We are going to run a small Farmers Market at the Carnival this Saturday.  The market will be open from 11-1, but we could use volunteers from 10-1.  If you want to come and help out with harvesting, packaging, arranging flowers, and selling our great produce and products, please email me directly.  If you just want to come out and buy some lettuce, kale, garlic, fava beans, seedlings, handmade vases with bouquets, potted succulents, bath salts, teas, body oil, etc., make sure you bring a reusable bag and some cash!

2. We are asking families to take part with caring for the garden over the summer.  This program has been running strong for three years now, and I am looking forward to another summer where different families water, weed, and visit the garden each week.  If you are interested in signing up for one of the available weeks below, please email me directly.

  • #4 June 29- July 5
  • #5 July 6- July 12
  • #6 July 13-July 19
  • #7 July 20-July 26
  • #8 July 27-Aug 2
  • #9 Aug 3-Aug 9
  • #11 Aug 17-Aug 23

3.  We are going to be displaying the 2nd graders botanical illustrations done in pencil at the Village Shops and Gallery in El Cerrito.  The art work will be on display May 26th, and then May 29th-June 2.

Next week, I will send out more information about this new event!

Thanks everyone and hope to see you in the garden,
Molly

How Can We Lower Class Sizes?

Hi Madera Folks -

One of the main reasons our class sizes went up, was due to a drop in temporary funding.  In June 2012, there was a vote to renew and raise the current parcel tax so that our class sizes could remain a bit smaller.  That vote failed by just over 1% (~650 votes).  We had more than 65% of votes in a JUNE election!  Bonds are currently passed when they have 55% of the vote.

To make it easier for local communities to pay for their own schools, California State Senator Mark Leno is sponsoring an amendment to our State Constitution, called SCA 3 to lower the voter approval level from 66.67% (2/3) to 55%, just like municipal bonds.

The hearing and vote is scheduled for next Wednesday, May 15th.

Please, if you have the time, send Senator Leno this attached letter.   Another method would be to call or to fax the letter to Leno’s office:

Capitol Office
Phone:  (916) 651-4011
Fax:  (916) 445-4722

or to email the committee itself:
(Senate Governance and Finance committee: sgf.committee@sen.ca.gov )

Conveniently, the El Cerrito Patch just posted an article with some background information on the past votes for parcel taxes.

If anyone is interested in pursuing this, or other issues like this, please contact me.

Thanks very much,
Jennifer
